I did it! Part 2 by Holly – My Gap Year From University: Choosing to Face Fears

“I would rather regret the things that I have done than the things that I have not.” ~ Lucille Ball

Holly in AustraliaAs I backpacked through Australia by myself, I came across many obstacles and fears. I’d like to share how I chose to handle these situations.

I didn’t want to let the fears prevent me from enjoying my time in Australia, so I decided to take on some of the fears instead of letting them rule me.

Here is one thing I did. I have a fear of heights. I don’t like them. In Cairns, in order to go to a beautiful waterfall, I had to jump from a high rock. All my friends jumped but one. He stayed with me because he knew I was scared. Should I chicken out??? He said he would stay with me. No…It would be a regret if I didn’t go for it. So this was my strategy. I told him to jump and leave me alone. If he stayed, I would be a chicken, but if he jumped then it was between me and me. He jumped and then I really got scared because I put myself on the line. Well…what can I say…I jumped! I made it to the waterfall. All my friends were waiting for me. I appreciated their support. The waterfall was gorgeous! I am the one who took the leap and didn’t give in to the fear. I went for it!

I’m also afraid of needles, but I’ve always wanted a tattoo, so with the encouragement of a couple of friends, I found a great cheap place in Darwin. I decided to tattoo “Faith” as it has special meaning to me.

I can’t believe it, but despite my fear, I did it!

I don’t regret any of the situations that scared me. I’m glad that I faced the fears. I feel it made me that much stronger. A message to everyone...no regrets!

I did it!! by Holly

Holly in AustraliaI took a gap year from university and decided to travel. I asked friends to come with me, but no one was able to so I went to Australia by myself. I landed in Sydney, made my way to Melbourne and I looked for a job. I had decided to do a combination of working and backpacking. I am 22 years old. This was my second time travelling like this without my family. I found a job packing fruit outside of Melbourne on a farm and did that for 3 months. Exhausting! I met great people. I made $6000 and then I travelled for 6 months. I backpacked everywhere and found out I’m really good at budgeting. When money got low I stopped in Darwin and worked as a waitress for 6 weeks. They trained me which was great. Then I travelled more. I met wonderful people and they have become wonderful friends.

I thought I was going alone, but I was never alone. Making decisions in the past has been hard for me. I had to make a lot of decisions.

Bev talks about building muscle – well that’s what I did. I felt anxious, but I walked through it.

I did it!!!

Mastery Practice Tool

Bring mindfulness through your 5 senses to an activity or setting that you enjoy. Choose a period of time before you begin so you are in charge, rather than your mind being in charge. Breathe deeply as you focus on each sense. Set your intention and attention.

Bev's Laughing and Breathing Belly Workshop for Children was one of the best I have attended. She has a gifted ability to gently connect with children and teach and share with them her techniques of belly breathing, rooting, mind vacations and laughter. These techniques soothe and calm them whenever they feel overwhelmed or anxious - be at school, home or before bed time. Whether you have an overwhelmed pre-schooler or a test-anxious pre-teen, Bev's approach works! I love that she gave parents the tools to model and share these fundamentals of meditation with their children. I would encourage families to take her course...your children will thank you and you will benefit from ways to keep yourself calm and allow wisdom in.
