Speaking of moving…by Mary Anne Lloyd

on the right track - keep movingOne of my favorite quotes by Mark Twain goes something like this.

“Even if we’re on the right track, we’ll get hit by a train if we don’t keep moving!”

Sometimes we really can’t figure out what to do or sometimes we don’t even know what we would like to do.  How are we supposed to do something when we don’t even know what it is that we will enjoy?  “Find a hobby,” says a therapist.  Really?

And that’s where moving becomes fun.  If we just keep moving in some way, we’re bound to bump into something.  We may not like everything, and sometimes we may run for cover, but generally we stumble across something interesting.  And moving doesn’t have to be formal.  It can be as simple as speaking to the person behind us in line at the grocery store.  It can be striking up conversations with those we see during the week, like the person in the bank. It can be going for a walk in a dog park and meeting dogs and their owners.  Someone we meet may suddenly break into song, or tell us a funny story, or tell us about a caretakers group that we desperately need. Someone may be looking for a yoga buddy. Someone may make us laugh.

We might end up getting a dog.  We might end up helping at the SPCA. We might end up at a Toastmasters meeting just to see what it’s like. We might learn about a good movie to rent on a Friday night. We may learn about some funny play going on in the neighborhood. We may just have a nicer hour in our day.

We can’t always foresee what movement will bring, but life seems to open up in unexpected ways.  And we sure don’t want to get hit by a train.

Using Pictures Rather Than Words

It is true that a picture in our mind is very powerful. It is more powerful than a paragraph of self-talk. Both the subconscious and the conscious mind respond to a picture, especially if it is encoded with emotions. If you want to increase the part of you that has a desire to live differently, then I encourage you to find images that you can hold in your mind or imagination as a way of reprogramming.

For me, there is power associated with this picture: I see a stick shift gear in my mind (encoded with love for my Dad). It tells me to navigate with alertness and self care both for myself, and those around me. A picture really does say a thousand words.

Reflect on your experiences in life. Find a memory that holds the power of alertness and self-accountability; one of successfully navigating or being engaged in self-care. Allow that picture to be embedded in your mind by imagining it, and feeling the emotion that goes with it. For me it is power and self-accountability. When you feel the feeling that goes with the picture, you embed it in your subconscious and conscious mind. Now you are reprogramming!
