Keep Your Door Open

“Living as an open door or as a revolving door…the choice is ours.” ~ Beverley Pugh

When I was working in Japan I studied many aspects of Eastern philosophy as a hobby. Many of them have become a way of life for me…not a technique, but a way of being and navigating.

I would like to share with you a way of breaking away from routine. Part of being alive and awake to life is being open and available to the unexpected. This is where change lies. August is a great month for practicing this one.

In the mornings, as part of a quiet awakening to your day, softly say to yourself, “I am going to allow for something new to occur”.

As you say it, place your attention on this beautiful saying. Imagine your heart and your mind opening like a grand door to all possibilities, not just the thinking mind.

I personally don’t say what I want to come in. I just allow for something new to occur. I always have liked surprises!

Today my mindset is on happy expectancy, but when I was growing up, my family carried a great deal of negative expectancy. My learning has been a very personal one as to how to move from negative expectancy to positive expectancy.

When I say “I am gong to allow for something new to occur”, I am actually moving into a welcoming mode…like an invitation. I am declaring this invitation.

Open to possibilities

Remember how you welcome friends when they come to visit. When you open your front door, there is a happy expectancy and a smile inside you. Have that kind of inviting feeling when you say the phrase.

I am so aware of how important our words are. Our words go straight to our subconscious. If we keep unawake, we stay in the same thinking pattern, use the same words and therefore the same things happen. All are related.

Enjoy saying this phrase and keep the doors to your heart and mind open.

All is Possible by Jamie Baker

Tennis Racket and BallsMy name is Jamie Baker. I am a tennis professional. In August, I played at the Odlum Brown at Hollyburn Country Club. I’m 25 years old and am ranked around 186 in the ATP Men’s rankings.

We all know despair. I experienced it when I least expected it. I defied all odds. I’m still stunned by it… but I’m here to tell you that even when all the odds are against you, all is possible and miracles do happen.

It started 4.5 years ago. I was ranked 220 in the world. My best ranking had been 185. I was 21, fit, happy and on a fabulous roll – I just won 12 matches in a row. It doesn’t get better than that.

Out of nowhere the symptoms began – swelling, bleeding, fatigue, “red” teeth, easy bruising. A possible diagnosis was leukemia. I actually felt fine inside, but my body was falling apart.

I had a rare blood disease, called ITP – a platelet count that was so very, very low, that my diagnosis was terminal. I was told that if I bumped my head, internal bleeding could not be stopped and I was instructed to lie totally still in bed for 36 hours – having been competing on a tennis court 5 days before.

I defied all the odds and got better. It took me 2.5 years to slowly re-build.

One day, I turned to my coach and said, “It’s over, I feel normal”. I will remember that moment always.

I had post-traumatic stress (or so Bev says) and the depression and panic attacks were real.

Today, I write to you to say, never give up. Miracles happen. It’s true that all is possible. Such gratitude – this feeling came to me. Now I want to give it to you.

If I feel funky, I know that I have closed down in some way. I probably reacted to one of my thoughts, or to what someone was saying. I actually ask or direct my heart energy to open again by saying this out loud: "My heart is open in the front and the back, and my mind in one with my heart. My heart is connected to the highest part of me." I imagine something I love - often swimming in the ocean - and I savour the love of it so I can feel my heart open again. I have turned my focus to it, and directed my heart energy to open. I do this before I begin an activity, or see anyone that for some reason feel I may be reactive towards. A tip: I have been known to do it in the bathroom when I am taking a break from dynamics, and I come out feeling more open and wiser. This works! The bathroom is a great place to bring yourself back into balance!!

Testimonial

My daughter, Trinity, attended her first Children’s Empowerment Workshop and she loved it! It has helped her deal with some of the real anxieties that all children go through - from the not so nice kid at school, to the imagination that runs away with her at night time, when we are getting ready for bed.

She practices her rooting and the different breathing techniques that she has learned, and has become stronger and more confident in dealing with different situations.
