Dealing with Entitlement

GratitudeI am a father of four. I earn a good living, and can offer my kids whatever they want. I was beginning to get concerned about attitude in two of my children. I had never been to counselling before, but I referred myself. It was a humbling experience for me.

Bev just read this newsletter to me over the phone, and I smiled at all the memories it brought back. I did both strategies. My kids were used to travelling first class all the time. I didn’t tell them I went to counselling. I just began to describe everything as an adventure. That was it!!!

I took our kids camping and they loved it! Lots of grumbling at the beginning, but by the end of the holiday they were 100% in. My wife is not a camper and she opted out. It was actually okay…I bonded with the kids, and she had a break.

I came up with a strategy for budget travelling. Three quarters of the trip was budget and the rest was first class. It worked well. Everyone liked that.

As feedback, I loved both strategies. They are practical and suit me.

Now one of my kids is travelling on their own, and knows how to budget everything. It’s a big boost to their self-esteem. It does pay to think these things through.

A Journey of Self-Growth – How Divorce Helped Me Find Myself

by Kate

summer sunrise over treesTwo years ago I left my husband. Well, to be precise, I told him it wasn’t going to work and that he needed to move out. There are a lot of reasons for this decision. Funnily enough, when I told him he quickly agreed with me. I guess we were both feeling unhappy for a long time, it just took me to finally act on it for things to change.

You see, I had come to a place where I knew that I had gotten married for all the wrong reasons. I married him for the life that I thought I wanted. You know the one – house, car, kids, dog – in other words, I was trying to live the “dream”. The problem was that I was trying to fit myself and my husband into this so called “dream life”, that in reality wasn’t really what either of us wanted. We felt smothered, and spent more time arguing then we ever did getting along. So I did the only thing that made sense to me; I left him.

Since then, you could say I’ve been on quite a journey of self-growth. At first, I went through every emotion imaginable – from grieving to anger to loneliness to heartbreak. Those first few months are a blur. I just focused on trying to keep it together for my kids, and making it through the day.

But gradually I was able to start to reflect on my life, and the choices I’ve made. I realized that I was the one who had created a life that wasn’t making me happy, so by that logic I could also create a new life – one where I could be happy and at peace with myself – emotionally and spiritually.

I started to meditate and practice yoga. I read books about inspiring people, and listened to audios like Bev’s Mastery of Health and Happiness. I began to see really positive aspects to my life. I realized that despite some bad choices, I had also made a lot of good ones.

Mostly, I started feeling gratitude – for the amazing people I know, for the good things going on in my life, and for all those little things that matter the most – like a hug from my 6 year old, and the way the sun looks coming up over the treetops in the morning. All of this has helped me to find myself again. I had lost that girl during my marriage, and I must admit that I was relieved to find her. I have a long way to go (really does personal growth ever stop?), but for now I’m content with feeling whole again, and that’s enough for me.

Where are you shining your Internal Flashlight?

Imagine that you have an internal flashlight, and you get to shine it on whatever you want. You can shine it on the past, the present, or the future. You can shine it on everything that is bad, or you can shine it on what is good. Or you can do both. Shine it on what is here right now in the present. As you do this say to yourself in this moment right now, I see…, I hear…, I touch…, I taste…, I smell… Breathe after each and notice it. Let your body feel it. Focus on what you appreciate in the moment. For example, say it is a beautiful comfortable chair that is supporting you. Nothing is too small. This is not about looking for the big things. Notice without judgement. The mind notices and becomes your partner in this beautiful exercise. Your heart opens to what you are noticing in the present. Your consciousness changes.

Testimonial

Bev's Laughing and Breathing Belly Workshop for Children was one of the best I have attended. She has a gifted ability to gently connect with children and teach and share with them her techniques of belly breathing, rooting, mind vacations and laughter. These techniques soothe and calm them whenever they feel overwhelmed or anxious - be at school, home or before bed time. Whether you have an overwhelmed pre-schooler or a test-anxious pre-teen, Bev's approach works! I love that she gave parents the tools to model and share these fundamentals of meditation with their children. I would encourage families to take her course...your children will thank you and you will benefit from ways to keep yourself calm and allow wisdom in.
